The New York Giants are entering the 2016 NFL Draft with several holes to fill despite their spending spree this offseason. Cornerback is still in need of depth, youth and athleticism despite signing Janoris Jenkins. Expect the Giants to address this issue in the draft, and one player who could be available in the second round is Virginia Tech cornerback Kendall Fuller.
His stock has dropped due to a torn meniscus in his right knee that ended his season after just three games. He also had wrist surgery prior to last season. His film prior to 2015 shows a player who is strong against the run, good in coverage and smart. He has excellent instincts that put him in position to make plays. He can be a ball hawk at times and did come away with six interceptions as a freshman in 2013.
The injury is obviously a concern, but he should be ready to play in 2016. He ran a 4.49 40-yard dash, so he has good but not elite speed. The Giants could plug him in as a slot corner or even at safety where some scouts think he is better suited given his play against the run. If the Giants selected Fuller they would be getting a football player who loves the game and has very good instincts. He does need work with getting his hips to be more fluid and reacting a bit quicker at times.
The Giants’ defense could use youth and depth at corner. Jayron Hosley isn’t coming back, and even though Jenkins replaces Prince Amukamara, the Giants don’t have much depth outside of Jenkins and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Fuller wouldn’t be asked to step in and start right away, but he could be a solid press corner in the NFL and could see quite a bit of playing time in his rookie year covering slot receivers.
Fuller could be just what the Giants need at corner and should be available in the second round. But if concerns over his knee persist, he could even fall to the third.
