The Dallas Cowboys are among the biggest winners of the 2016 NFL Draft and it hasn’t even begun yet. With the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles trading up to the first and second overall picks and sure to take quarterbacks, the Cowboys will almost have the pick of the litter among defensive prospects. Considering the Cowboys desperate need for pass rushers the pre-draft drama is working to the Cowboys’ advantage.

Jerry Jones’ Cowboys needed help in the pass rush before DeMarcus Lawrence with his team-best eight sacks were facing a four-game suspension. Randy Gregory has already been suspended for four games. The team signed Cedric Thornton and Benson Mayowa and re-signed Jack Crawford. They have 12 combined career sacks. Greg Hardy is as good as gone and that will be a good thing given his off-field issues, and his on-field antics. Defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford finished third on the team in sacks with five behind Lawrence and Hardy. The team finished 25th in the NFL with 31 sacks, a number that looks out of reach with this current crop of pass rushers.

The Cowboys need a difference-maker, and thanks to the Eagles and Rams trading up, one might fall right into their laps. Right now, the only team ahead of the Cowboys is the San Diego Chargers. There is a very good chance the Chargers address their offensive line, though even if they do pick a defensive end, the Cowboys will still be able to grab an impact player.

Joey Bosa of Ohio State and DeForest Buckner of Oregon are arguably the top two defensive ends in the draft. At least one should be there for them when they pick. Both should be able to make an immediate impact in the NFL. They could also take UCLA linebacker Myles Jack and hope that a defensive end like Noah Spence falls to the second round.

If Jerry Jones wants to get back to the playoffs then he must address his team’s needs, and that is without a doubt the team’s pass rush. The Cowboys should be ecstatic entering this year’s draft. As long as Jones doesn’t go off the rails, something Cowboys’ fans fear every year, he should walk away from the draft in good position to challenge for the NFC East once again.
