The New York Giants will enter the 2016 NFL Draft with a hole at wide receiver. They lost Rueben Randle to free agency and never seriously considered bringing him back. They also never got heavily involved with any free agent. This has led to a lot of speculation the Giants will target a wide receiver in the draft.
After Odell Beckham Jr., the Giants have Dwayne Harris, who is really a third receiver. Victor Cruz is the biggest unknown and has essentially missed the last two seasons with knee and calf injuries. Beyond that, the Giants have unproven commodities so adding a receiver could be something they do in Round 2. One intriguing prospect is Rutgers wide receiver Leonte Carroo.
Carroo doesn’t have the height, listed at a shade under 6-foot, that the Giants usually seek in their receivers. He doesn’t have burning speed either with a 4.5 40-yard dash. However, he is a crisp route runner and plays faster on film. He is deceptively fast, and once he gets going he can break free for a big gain. He has excellent hands and uses them away from his body and will fight for the ball in traffic. He looks comfortable on the outside or in the slot and uses excellent vision and his route-running skills to get behind defenders.
Carroo led all FBS receivers with 4.11 yards per route despite playing only 363 snaps last season. He caught 39 passes for 809 yards and 10 touchdowns in only eight games. In 2014, he caught 55 passes for 1,086 yards and 10 touchdowns in 13 games. With his hands and fearlessness in traffic, Carroo can be a possession receiver who will occasionally break free for big yardage.
With Beckham on the one side, Carroo would be a nice addition. He can line up anywhere and be a reliable target for Eli Manning, which is something Randle never developed into. The Giants could certainly use his steadiness opposite Beckham. He might not develop into a No. 1 wideout, but he can certainly be a No. 2 with a ton of upside. He should be available in Round 2 and might even fall to Round 3.
