Sam Bradford was less than pleased when the Philadelphia Eagles jumped from No. 8 to No. 2 in the 2016 NFL Draft and immediately requested a trade through his agent, Tom Condon.
The team is fully expected to take one of the top two quarterbacks on the board and all indications point to it being North Dakota State‘s Carson Wentz. The Los Angeles Rams acquired the No. 1 pick less then a week prior to the Eagles making their move and are expected to take Cal‘s Jared Goff.
Bradford signed a two-year, $35 million contract with the Eagles on Mar. 1. Philadelphia saved a few million dollars in 2016 by avoiding the franchise tag, which would’ve paid Bradford $19.95 over one year. They also signed Chase Daniel to a three-year, $21 million deal. He was expected to back up Bradford.
Despite the rumblings that another quarterback will be brought in tonight, Bradford’s panic over the situation may be misguided. Wentz played his college ball at the FCS level which might suggest that he’s not ready to immediately take over an NFL franchise. He has the measurables to succeed at the highest level and certainly has a great resume with multiple championships, but it’s ideal for anyone to be able to sit and watch for a season or more. We’ve seen quarterbacks have successful careers after starting opening weekend, though there are also examples of players who probably benefited by waiting.
Bradford has the right to request a trade, but the Eagles also have the right to say no. If they feel it’s in their best interest to have Wentz sit and learn, then they should make every attempt to hold onto Bradford. Philadelphia has said they still intend to start the veteran in week one and though you can’t always believe what you hear, it would make the most sense for the organization.
The Denver Broncos showed the most interest in trading for Bradford, though according to ESPN Insider Adam Schefter, they plan to move on. Anything can happen, especially with the NFL draft just around the corner, but it seems the Eagles want Bradford in Philadelphia for at least one more season.
