The Tennessee Titans originally had the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, but they completed a trade with the Los Angeles Rams a few weeks ago and ended up moving back to No. 15. With the extra picks as ammunition, the Titans moved back up on draft night as they worked out a deal with the Cleveland Browns to move up to No. 8 overall and select Michigan State offensive tackle Jack Conklin.
In the trade, the Titans got Conklin and the Browns’ sixth-round pick in the 2016 draft while the Browns got the Titans’ No. 15 overall pick, a third-round pick, in this draft and a second-round pick in 2017.
The Titans had been extremely high on Ole Miss left tackle Laremy Tunsil since the draft process began, but one would have to think that things changed on draft night when a video of Tunsil leaked onto social media of him smoking a bong. I firmly believe that Tunsil was going to be the Titans’ target until that happened.
Conklin may not have a projected ceiling as high as Tunsil, but he’s definitely more reliable. It’s very likely that he will be the Titans’ starting left tackle in Week 1 of the 2016 season, and if he can get a little better in pass coverage, he could be the starter for 10 years or more.
