The Buffalo Bills had been looking at quarterbacks during the 2016 NFL Draft, and it was widely assumed that the team would select one at one point during the event. The Bills did just that to close the fourth round, as they selected Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones to be the backup. He should be an excellent addition to the roster.
The Bills really did not need to get one of the top quarterbacks in the draft because of the performance of Tyrod Taylor last season. As a first-year starter, Taylor had a great season and displayed the potential to be an above average NFL quarterback. The major issue with Taylor was that he was injured at various points last season, and the Bills struggled when he was out.
The main reason for the team’s struggles was the play of backup EJ Manuel. Manuel, a former first-round pick, looked downright awful in his attempts to play in place of Taylor. He was not comfortable in the pocket and simply could not be productive on offense. The Bills really need to part ways with him, and adding Jones will allow them to do that.
Jones is a little bit of a raw prospect, but he is going to develop into a really solid player as he gets more NFL experience. He has every tool that a quarterback could need. He’s big, has a strong arm strength, is athletic, and I would describe him as a very poor man’s Cam Newton. The fact is that the Bills will be able to develop him for a couple of years as Taylor continues to start, and that will give them a chance to get the most out of Jones.
