One of the most important pieces of the Buffalo Bills‘ offensive line is reportedly going to be sticking around for quite awhile. After being franchised earlier in the offseason, left tackle Cordy Glenn agreed to a five-year deal that will keep him with the Bills long term. The deal was an excellent move by the Bills who needed to make sure that Glenn did not leave during free agency in 2017.
Glenn was a second-round pick in the star studded 2012 NFL Draft, but he has been one of the best performers from that class. Glenn has been as reliable as they come at the tackle position. He has started 61 games over his four year career while excelling in run blocking and performing well in pass protection. He is not as heralded as some of the other tackles in the league, but he is certainly a top-five left tackle.
Last season, Glenn and Richie Incognito locked down the left side of the Bills’ offensive line and they were a major reason that the team had the top ranked rushing offense in the league. The duo should have similar success this season, thanks to the solid stable of backs the team has acquired. If Tyrod Taylor can further his development, the Bills’ offense could really take off.
Keeping Glenn around was extremely important for the Bills. The team does not have much potential long-term talent on offense aside from Sammy Watkins, and the team needed to make sure they locked their top notch tackle who will not be 27 until shortly after the NFL season begins. They were able to do just that, and it should help the team.
As far as financials are concerned, Glenn will reportedly be making $65 million over the duration of his contract with $36 million guaranteed. This will give Glenn the fourth most valuable contract amongst left tackles and it will pay out the second most on average behind only Trent Williams. These numbers are absolutely fair given Glenn’s strong track record, and there is no reason to expect a drop in performance with him. It appears as though the Bills have agreed to a fair deal with an elite performer, so this is a great move by their front office.
