The Tennessee Titans made the decision to release backup quarterback Zach Mettenberger on Monday morning. The team needed room on the roster to sign four players from this weekend’s tryout camp, and Mettenberger ended up being on the short end of the stick after the Titans drafted Marcus Mariota last year and signed Matt Cassel to be his backup this offseason.
The Titans selected Mettenberger in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, and there was some thought that he could be the long-term answer at quarterback before the team drafted Mariota with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.
Mettenberger ended up starting 10 games in his two seasons with the Titans, but the team went winless in those starts. He completed 60.3 percent of his passes for 2,347 yards, 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. While he may not be in the Titans’ plans, Mettenberger should have a number of suitors on the open market as he has the ability to play in this league as long as he finds the right opportunity.
