Quarterback Robert Griffin III has a lot to prove this year. He was outperformed by Kirk Cousins in the last two seasons on the Washington Redskins, and the franchise released the 2012 Offensive Rookie of the Year as a result.
Griffin could blame a lot of the circumstances surrounding his tenure with the Redskins on other people, but he also has to look in the mirror this summer. He must improve as a quarterback to have any chance of a long NFL career, and he’s attempting his comeback with the Cleveland Browns. They have missed the playoffs in the past 13 seasons, and their new head coach Hue Jackson will try to break that streak with his handpicked QB.
“My job is to create the environment for [Griffin] to do the work, and do everything I can to assist him be the best he can be,” said Jackson to the Undefeated. “You have to have a player [who] is willing to accept that. He has from Day 1. He has done everything that we have asked him to do.”
Griffin can revitalize the Browns with the correct attitude, and the key thing for him will be focus. He needs to stop worrying about his endorsements and accept advice from the quarterbacks who came before him. Warren Moon and Doug Williams, in particular, can offer him a lot of wisdom, and all Griffin must do is humble himself enough to listen. Cleveland could sure use another playoff run to lift their spirits, and all it will take is the right QB. Johnny Manziel wasn’t that dude, and the Browns will appreciate having a leader who isn’t partying in Vegas every other weekend.
They were quite happy to move on from “Johnny Football” this offseason, and they ditched him at the perfect moment considering his legal troubles. Griffin hasn’t had any problems like that during his time in the NFL, and he could be primed for a resurgence in the ideal conditions.
LeBron James could definitely give Robert some tips when it comes to navigating Cleveland, and those two could bond over being intelligent and game-changing athletes. The Browns haven’t won a championship since the days of Jim Brown, who James paid homage to during a playoff game last year. Griffin could help the Browns return to the postseason if their young players develop quickly. It’s all up to Robert at this point.
