With a busy offseason for the Tennessee Titans, the arrival of wide receiver Rishard Matthews was overshadowed by the arrival of running back DeMarco Murray from the Philadelphia Eagles – and for good reason.
Murray, who is just one year removed from a spectacular season with the Dallas Cowboys, meets an immediate need for the Titans. Tennessee has not had a capable running back since the prime of Chris Johnson, and Titans’ fans will be overjoyed to see a player of Murray’s caliber brought into this offense.
Naturally, this offseason move was the biggest for the team outside of the team trading the No. 1 pick. However, Murray’s arrival might not make as big of an impact as the arrival of Matthews from the Miami Dolphins.
Tennessee’s receivers have been nothing short of disappointing over the last few seasons. Justin Hunter and Kendall Wright seemed primed to break out, but have seemingly lost something in their game due to the constant influx of new coaches and quarterbacks. The stability of Marcus Mariota should increase both of these players’ production, but it is well past time for the Titans to add a capable deep threat receiver like Matthews.
Matthews played extremely well for the Dolphins last year, despite not playing in five of the team’s 16 games. With 43 receptions on 61 targets for 662 yards and two touchdowns, Matthews provided a much needed spark for a passing offense ranked just No. 19 in the NFL.
This type of spark is exactly what the Titans need and could lead to a much improved passing game in 2016. Watch for Matthews to have a big season with his new teams, and Mariota to shine with new weapons like Matthews and Murray.
