NFL Overtime Shortening Expected Via Owners Vote at Next Week's Meetings

After tabling the idea at the March meetings, NFL owners are expected to approve a rule change that would shorten overtime from 15 minutes to 10 minutes going forward.

This means that one of the dissenters from the original vote will have to be converted to approving the measure after 23 “yes” votes failed to get the issue through last time.

What these overtime changes will mean is more ties most likely, with less time for teams to break the deadlock from regulation going into the OT session.

But ties aren’t necessarily a bad thing, as the league standings would be spiced up quite a bit with more draws and it would also eliminate the convoluted tiebreaker rules currently used for determining playoff spots.

This could be a win-win for fans in the long run.
