Teemu Selanne Continues To Be A Nightmare For Detroit Red Wings

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

The Anaheim Ducks have made some serious noise this season, rebounding from a down year in which they missed the postseason by a mile. If Teemu Selanne has it his way, the run that they’re on right now will continue to the point where it will allow him to ride off into the sunset.

That’s, of course, assuming Selanne decides to retire. The past couple of offseasons have been filled with questions about whether or not the veteran forward would decide to call it a career, but he keeps coming back. Not that anyone has a problem with that.

One team that may have an issue with Selanne deciding to come back for another year is the Detroit Red Wings. Selanne has scored some big goals in his career, more than one of which have come against the Original Six franchise. That continued on Tuesday night in Game 1 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals.

Selanne scored the power play goal early in the third period to give the Ducks the lead over the Red Wings by a 2-1 count. It was a lead they would not relinquish as they went on to win Game 1 3-1. It’s not the first time we’ve seen Selanne score an important postseason goal against Detroit, though.

He scored one in overtime in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals back in 2007. It was a goal that gave the Ducks a 3-2 series lead and would eventually lead to their first, and only, Stanley Cup in franchise history.

Even at the age of 42, Teemu Selanne just keeps on rolling. He may be the most universally liked player in the league. If he continues this, though, his popularity will almost certainly drop in the state of Michigan.
