All season long, the Los Angeles Kings have been the epitome of inconsistency, looking like the reigning champions one night and like a non-playoff team the next. Nowhere was that more apparent than their dominating win over the Minnesota Wild, followed up with their flat showing against the Chicago Blackhawks. The team needs a spark, and while they lack truly high-end prospects, Nick Shore of the AHL’s Manchester Monarchs and young brother of Drew Shore of the Florida Panthers could really help them out.
Shore, a Colorado native and former University of Denver star center, was the team’s third round pick in 2011 and is in his second year of pro hockey with the Monarchs. He leads the team in goals and points and is a reliable, steady hand defensively who would surely mesh with Darryl Sutter’s system very well. I really think his stellar play, coupled with the Kings’ lack of consistency, has warranted his first NHL call-up, and the Kings are doing no one any favors by not bringing him up.
I’m by no means saying the 22-year-old Shore is a cure all and will turn the Kings’ season around, but he’s ready for the NHL and surely wouldn’t hurt. Getting some young legs and youthful energy in the lineup is an all-around winning formula for everyone on the team. Not only can he spell certain veterans, but he even push some forwards and create a healthy competition for ice time. For a team like the Kings, this could be just what the doctor order to re-establish some consistency.
