The Chicago Blackhawks and Tampa Bay Lightning treated NHL fans to yet another thriller in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals. The Blackhawks moved to within one game of winning their third Stanley Cup in the last six years by defeating the Lightning 2-1 on Saturday night.
Patrick Sharp gave Chicago the always important first goal of the game by capitalizing on Ben Bishop’s terrible decision to leave the net and try to play the puck. Valtteri Filppula evened the score for Tampa Bay at the 10:53 mark of the second period off a perfect pass from Jason Garrison. Once again, the score was tied heading into the final period.
The Blackhawks retook the lead two minutes into the third period when Antoine Vermette snuck behind Jonathan Drouin and put a rebound in the back of the net behind Ben Bishop.
Corey Crawford was rock solid the rest of the way and the Blackhawks held on for the 2-1 win. Every game in the series has been decided by one goal and I don’t expect that to change in Chicago for Game 6.
Patrick Kane was held off the scoresheet once agin in Game 5, but I expect him to get loose and break out of his slump as the Blackhawks have a chance to raise the cup on Monday night.
Prediction: Blackhawks 3, Lightning 2
