After the extension of Michael Del Zotto, the Philadelphia Flyers only have about $360,000 of cap space and have a logjam at the blue line. It is absolutely necessary to move at least one of the team’s defenders. The 2014-15 season was an embarrassing one for the Flyers defensively, and frankly, no one is safe. While it’s highly unlikely, even Michael Del Zotto could be shopped (again, very unlikely). But Flyers GM Ron Hextall needs to make it his mission to move a contract or two.
A popular name being thrown around as trade bait is Luke Schenn. While Luke Schenn certainly isn’t the best defenseman on the team, he does contribute. At 6-foot-2, 229 pounds, Schenn is a big boy, imposing his will on smaller guys on the forecheck. His size alone is something to be coveted. He doesn’t put up many points, but he is a guy who can be a solid d-man if paired with the right players.
Schenn is only 25, so there’s still room for him to improve his game. But at the same time, that’s what people have been saying about Schenn for years now. The fans are getting impatient, and the Flyers should follow suit.
Another guy the Flyers are looking to move is Andrew MacDonald. Now, this one is going to be tricky because MacDonald’s contract is atrocious. In 2014, he signed a six-year, $30 million extension, which is way too much to be paying a below-average defenseman. If Ron Hextall can continue to deceive other GMs with his black magic, then maybe MacDonald can be moved for a somewhat fair price.
The Flyers should take whatever they can get for MacDonald. By getting rid of the former New York Islander, the Flyers will open up a ton of cap space. Even though the Flyers shouldn’t rush Ivan Provorov, moving MacDonald could allow the seventh overall pick to take a roster spot if he truly is ready for the big club.
Even though neither of these moves are very realistic by the time training camp begins in September, it’s something that Hextall is certainly thinking about.
