Half of the NHL had their scouts in attendance at the Chicago Blackhawks‘ road game against the Philadelphia Flyers earlier this week. The Toronto Maple Leafs were one of the teams that were represented.
The Flyers have been involved in trade rumors for a while now, and if half of the league is there, you would have to believe that something could be imminent. Toronto’s never been afraid to be involved in trade rumors or discussions, so their involvement should come as no surprise.
The Flyers’ Luke Schenn and Brayden Schenn are both being discussed in potential trades with other organizations. The duo are not the only ones being talked about, as Matt Read, Andrew MacDonald, Sam Gagner, Wayne Simmonds and Mark Streit could be dealt shortly.
It’s not absolutely certain, that the Maple Leafs were targeting players on the Flyers’ roster. They could have been looking and targeting players on the Blackhawks.
Looking at the Maple Leafs’ rebuilding plan and assessing the Flyers’ roster, any of the names listed above could be targets they would love to add to their roster. They are all young and fit into the plan of the franchise that has only made the playoffs once over the past decade.
Luke Schenn is a potential unrestricted free agent this summer, and Philadelphia would probably love to move that contract off the books. He has only played in two of the first four games and was a healthy scratch for the last two contests. Toronto and Philadelphia have already worked together in a trade involving Schenn when James van Riemsdyk went to play with Toronto on June 23, 2012.
His brother, Brayden, has three points in the past four games, and Read has two goals in four games. All of them would be welcome additions to the Toronto roster.
It seems that whomever is involved the Flyers are up to something and would love to reconstruct their roster if they can find a trade partner. They Flyers are definitely a team to watch in the days ahead, because the Flyers would probably love to unload any aging players and expiring contracts to change things up.
If players are for sale in Philadelphia, you have to give Toronto credit for kicking the tires and seeing what assets they can add to their roster.
