Seth Jones has been a name deep hockey fans have known for a long time. He was the Connor McDavid of defensemen. He was a can’t-miss prospect who was sure to go No. 1 overall.
Except he didn’t. Jones inexplicably fell all the way to No. 4 overall to the Nashville Predators in the 2013 draft. Nathan MacKinnon, Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Drouin were picked prior to Jones, and two of those three teams are already beginning to really regret their decisions.
Jones is on his way to being one of the best defensemen in the league. He is not just one of the best young defensemen, or best American defensemen; he’s one of the NHL‘s best.
Jones is just 21 years old, so he could have 20 more years in the league. He is only going to get better, which is scary because he is already really good.
He has already showed a great scoring touch. While he will never be a Mike Green on the blue line, it is realistic to expect 10 goals and 25 assists from him. Those are very good numbers coming from the back end.
The Predators were the perfect team for Jones to start with. He was able to play with the likes of Shea Weber, Roman Josi and now Barret Jackman. He only knows how to play at the highest level given his experience with the very best.
Jones is well on his way to being in the same conversation as Weber, P.K. Subban and Mark Giordano, and he is ready to take the next step.
