As an 83-year-old New York native, Stan Fischler is an established NHL writer and has been associated with the MSG network doing telecasts with the New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers and New York Islanders. He is one of North America’s best, credible hockey writers. However, recently there was an article in the Hockey News magazine in which Fischler wrote an article suggesting that Sidney Crosby, 2005 Pittsburgh Penguins first overall NHL Draft pick, is on the downside of his career and that they should consider trading Crosby to the Toronto Maple Leafs before his career continues to fall.
To suggest that Crosby is on the decline of his career is ridiculous, because he is one of the best. He is one of the first chosen in NHL fantasy drafts among hockey fans. Over the course of the last two seasons, he finished with a combined 188 points in 157 regular season games. During the playoffs, the past two seasons he has scored 13 points in 18 games. The guy can clearly play, and Fischler’s claim is questionable. As silly as that claim is, Fischler goes further into the ridiculous and suggests that the Toronto Maple Leafs could be a target for Pittsburgh to trade him to. Yes, while it is true that if Wayne Gretzky could be traded from the Edmonton Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings, then anybody can be dealt. However, the Toronto Maple Leafs have nothing to part with equal to the high demands the Penguins would want back for ‘Sid the Kid’.
The fans in Toronto are already licking their chops with anticipation at the idea of signing Tampa Bay Lightning‘s forward Steven Stamkos on July 1, 2016. It is possible to sign Stamkos as a free agent, but nobody is going to believe or accept that the Toronto Maple Leafs have the ingredients to acquire Sid. To somehow have enough money to support Stamkos and Crosby’s contract structure on a roster in a salary cap era is something that could only happen in video games.
