When the Los Angeles Kings signed Dustin Brown to an eight year contract extension in 2013, it showed that the Kings wanted Brown to be an essential part of the team’s future. After two seasons it has become evident that Brown has no place in the Kings future, which means that Los Angeles must trade their captain.
Los Angeles’ first mistake was signing Brown to an eight year extension when it was obvious that he had already peaked in his career and would only decline in his level of play. Brown has finished with just 27 points in both the 2013-14 and the 2014-15 NHL season, and has just seven points in 22 games this season.
This level of production is quite disappointing for a player who makes $5.8 million a season and is also the team’s captain.
With a number of young players having good starts to the season like Tyler Toffoli and Tanner Pearson, it’s clear that the Kings need to evaluate their roster and move on from older underperforming players.
The only issue with trading Brown is finding a team that would want him or more specifically, his contract. Brown will be 37 years old by the time his contract is up after the 2021-22 season. So any team that trades for Brown would either give Los Angeles very little in return or they would expect more from the Kings in order to make taking Brown’s contract more appealing.
Los Angeles needs to move Brown soon while he still has some offensive ability. If they wait a few years to trade him they will have much difficulty finding a suitable trade partner and will probably have to spend more just to make the trade happen.
Brown needs to be traded this season because the longer they wait the harder it’ll be to trade him.
