When Jeff Skinner was drafted seventh overall in the 2010 NHL Draft he seemed destined to be one of the top goal scorers in the NHL. That seemed to the case after finishing with 63 points in 81 games in the 2010-11 season, but now Skinner is a shadow of his former self and it’s time for the Carolina Hurricanes to realize that.
After Skinner’s first season he struggled with injuries, but remained consistent in his level of play. It’s only recently that he’s been able to play mostly a full season and that has made it apparent that Skinner has stopped developing at just 23 years of age.
In 2013-14 Skinner finished with 54 points in 71 games and last season with just 31 points in 77 games. It may be a result of the injuries he’s had over the last few seasons that have affected his game, but he just isn’t that star player he was projected to be.
Skinner has just six points in 23 games this season, which puts him on pace for a similar amount of points as last season. Carolina needs to move on from Skinner and trade him now. Skinner still has four years left on his contract with an annual cap hit of $5.7 million. Carolina needs to trade him before he regresses more and that contract becomes a problem for the organization.
If Carolina can trade Skinner at the Trade Deadline they should be able to get a very good return for him, since most people still think of Skinner as the quick sniper who can put up 30 goals a season.
