According to multiple reports, Notre Dame sophomore quarterback Tommy Rees was arrested overnight Thursday and charged with resisting law enforcement, battery to a law enforcement officer, minor consumption, and public intoxication following a confrontation with police in South Bend, Indiana.
Rees and linebacker Carlo Calabrese were allegedly involved in a scuffle with South Bend police, the details of which are not clear at this point, nor is it clear which of the charges against Rees is being considered a felony as reports have suggested.
Calabrese, on the other hand, was only charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct and was released on bail later in the evening.
Tommy Rees is the de facto starter for the Fighting Irish going into the 2012-2013 season after starting 14 of the team’s 15 games last season, in spite of having plenty of competition behind him for the starting role.
If the charges against Rees are substantial enough– and the suggestion of a felony signals they may be– this competition will quickly open up and Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly will have a major disciplinary issue on his hands that will have to be handled with speed and force.
As an aside, could this open the door for true freshman phenom Gunner Kiel?
There’s little to suggest it wouldn’t if worse indeed comes to worse.
Just as soon as it appears Notre Dame is getting back on its feet and edging back toward competitiveness, something unfortunate seems to happen.
With the summer rolling around, more distractions seem to bubble up rather than less.
Given this, it could be a very uncomfortable summer in South Bend.
