According to both The National Football Post and Profootballtalk.com, the Oakland Raiders are in preliminary searches for a new general manager.
Although Oakland has no early favorites or any high-profile targets in mind, it is believed that current Raiders head coach and his recent success may influence who the Raiders may hire.
Whoever is hired will have undoubtedly have some big shoes to file in being the Oakland’s first true G.M. since longtime Hall-Of-Fame owner and general manager Al Davis assumed the role in 1972.
Although this may be pure speculation, a prospective Raiders GM would have to meet the following criteria of running a 4-3 defense, emphasizing the long-held traditional Raider philosophy of a fast and aggressive defense and fast players at the skill position.
What the Raiders may also look for is a G.M who would embrace the long vertical passing game—an Al Davis trademark—Oakland may also look for a candidate who comes from the modern-day West Coast offense family tree of Mike Holmgren, Andy Reid, John Fox, Jon Gruden and Mike Shanahan.
Do not be too surprised to hear names such as San Francisco 49ers director of player personnel, Tom Gable, Philadelphia Eagles director of player personnel, Ryan Grigson, Cleveland Browns director of player personnel, Jon Sandusky and Washington Redskins director of player personnel in Scott Campbell.
Oakland has no current timetable to hire a new GM and may wait till the end of the 2011-12 season.
