According to reports, former Ohio State University football coach Jim Tressel could be headed to the University of Akron, not to coach, but instead to serve as an administrator in the school’s athletic department.
Apparently, a spokesman from Akron University told the Cleveland Plain-Dealer the following:
“When Jim Tressel and other alumni assisted us in our search for a football coach last December, we began to engage in dynamic conversations about Jim’s professional goals outside of athletics. We share a common interest in innovative programs for student success. Our discussions continue.”
The school has a press conference scheduled for 10 am Eastern time on Thursday to make a yet-to-be-clarified announcement. It’s reasonable to assume that this announcement will deal with Akron’s hiring of Tressel.
Tressel’s hire would signal a substantial change of career for a coach who once seemed destined to finish his career on the sidelines in Columbus prior to a scandal that rocked Ohio State to its core.
After spending 2011 as an advisor to the Indianapolis Colts, Tressel must have seen something that led him to stray away from the coaching profession all together in the short term and toward administration. It will be interesting to see what role he will undertake at Akron– if his hire is indeed finalized– and what affect this hire will have on a mid-major program that struggles to compete with its in-state counterparts.
