Oklahoma Sooners Non-Conference Schedule Still With Questions
While the rest of the country awaits the release of the Big 12 schedule, the Oklahoma Sooners are dealing with their own scheduling problems.
As of Friday, the Sooners still had two open spots on their schedule for out of conference opponents. While there have been several possibilities thrown out, nothing has been confirmed or made official.
The Sooners only official non-conference game on the schedule is an Oct. 27 home date against Notre Dame. The Sooners and Fighting Irish begin a home and home series in 2012, with the Sooners making the return trip to South Bend in 2013.
The Sooners were only looking for one non conference game in 2012 when TCU’s move to the Big 12 turned the matchup from a non conference game to a conference game. Suddenly, OU was looking for two games instead of one.
There have been rumors of a home and home with Central Florida, and Florida State has also contacted OU in attempts to set up another game in 2012. 2011 FCS national champion North Dakota State has also been contacted by OU about a trip to Norman.
Yesterday, CBSSports.com’s Dennis Dodd reported on Twitter the Sooners could start the season in El Paso, Texas against the UTEP Miners. If that’s the case, there won’t be very many happy fans in Norman.
However, nothing has been finalized, and this could be one of the reasons the Big 12 schedule has not been released yet. It has been rumored the Sooners will face both TCU and West Virginia on the road in 2012, so OU needs two home games, no matter who they pick up.
Details should be released next week, but that’s not a certainty.
