Huskies Set, Break Records In 52-24 Win Over Colorado
Keith Price can smile all he wants after his performance against Colorado (1-6, 0-3). Price came into the game with 17 touchdowns through five games which put him seventh for most passing touchdowns in a single season. After the win Price is now tied with Jake Locker for fifth with 21. Today was a game where you could feel at least one record was going to either be set or broken and that’s exactly what happened.
With the 52-24 win it marked the first time in school history that Washington (5-1, 3-0) scored at least 30 points in each of their first six games. It also marked the first time Washington has gone 3-0 in conference play since 1997. Price’s performance was the icing on the cake as Washington improves to 5-1 in 2011 one win shy of being bowl eligible for consecutive years.
The improvement from 2010 to 2011 has been day-and-night with the offense showing no signs of struggle as the season progresses. Washington ran for a combined 295 yards on 40 carries which sealed the victory.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian wasn’t hesitant to show his appreciation for how well his team played today and so far this season.
“The first half was obviously one of the best halves of football we’ve played since we’ve been here”. Washington scored 38 points in the first half which is the most in a single half dating back to 1999 against Oregon when Washington scored 45. Washington went on to win that game 47-21.
Washington scored a touchdown their first five possessions and scored on six consecutive drives (Erik Folk convicted on a 41-yard field goal to close out the half). Offensively in a nutshell everything was clicking and with seven touchdowns coming from seven different players Sark was ecstatic with the play of his skill position players.
“It’s fascinating. I haven’t been this way in a long time for myself personally and when you’re calling plays and with this team right now, I’m not calling plays for a specific guy. We’re calling the best play or the moment and not concerned about who might be the guy and ‘can he make that play’”.
With the way the Washington offense is playing at this rate you could see a case made for Keith Price being in the running for the Heisman. Sark wouldn’t be surprised if Price was named as a finalist.
“No not at all I think Keith, with the way he’s played so far and the skills he has he certainly should be mentioned in the Heisman. Now he has to keep playing at the level he’s playing at right now for that to happen but I certainly could see a case being made”.
Price now is second in the FBS for passing touchdowns behind Baylor’s Robert Griffen III who increased his total to 23 today. Nonetheless Steve Sarkisian has this program back in the right direction and as the season progresses Sark could have this Washington team ranked in the top 15 or 20 by seasons end.
Next up for Washington is Pac-12 leader Stanford who feature the consensus No.1 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, Andrew Luck.
