As the major shakeup among head coaches in the Pac 12 continues, Arizona State may be getting close to getting their man.

Just days after relieving head coach Dennis Erickson of his duties with the Sun Devils, ASU has reportedly offered up the gig to Houston head coach Kevin Sumlin.

Word first came down from Doug Haller, of The Arizona Republic:

Sumlin has been one of the more coveted names on the market, and has been mentioned as a candidate for multiple schools, including Pac 12 rival UCLA. However, it appears as if the Bruins are targeting a name more like Boise State’s Chris Petersen, leaving Sumlin and the Sun Devils as a match made in heaven.

Of course, there’s still the matter of Sumlin actually accepting the job. That remains to be seen, as Houston is prepping for the Conference USA title game, in search of a possible BCS bowl appearance for the Cougars.

ASU’s offering of the job may have also been a proactive move in the event that Texas A&M decides to cut loose their head coach, Mike Sherman. Given his previous time spent in the Big 12, this could throw a wrench into the Devils’ plans.

Either way, it’s hard to imagine Sumlin remaining in Houston, with plenty of more lucrative offers out there. We should know more regarding Sumlin and the Sun Devils’ vacancy before long.

Stay tuned.
