Pittsburgh Steelers Defensive Coordinator Dick LeBeau Will Be a Free Agent After Season; Eagles Should Heavily Pursue LeBeau
The contract of Pittsburgh Steelers’ defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau expires after the season.
Although he is 73 years old, LeBeau will undoubtedly be one of the most sought after free agents in the NFL.
LeBeau will likely resign with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
I have also heard rumors of LeBeau heading to Arizona, where a number of former Pittsburgh coaches have gone in recent years.
But don’t count out Philadelphia. It’s not likely but LeBeau does have a little experience in the City of Brotherly Love.
After a 14-year career with the Detroit Lions in which he intercepted the eighth most passes in NFL history, LeBeau joined the NFL as the Eagles’ special teams coach (for three seasons).
He also served four years as the Green Bay Packers’ defensive backfield coach. He then went to the Cincinnati Bengals, where he served as the defensive backfield coach for four seasons and the defensive coordinator for eight seasons.
The Bengals appeared in two Super Bowls during LeBeau’s tenure.
He left in 1992 to join the Pittsburgh Steelers as the defensive backfield coach, and was named the defensive coordinator in 1995.
The Steelers advanced to Super Bowl XXX in January of 1996.
LeBeau rejoined the Bengals as a defensive coordinator/assistant head coach from 1997 to 2000, before serving an unsuccessful three-year stint as the team’s head coach.
He joined the Buffalo Bills as their assistant head coach in 2003.
And he rejoined the Pittsburgh Steelers as their defensive coordinator from 2004 to the present time, where he has helped the defense win two Super Bowls, appear in a third (which they could win), and reach the postseason five times.
LeBeau is quite frankly a living legend. He is widely considered the greatest defensive coordinator in the history of the National Football League.
With all due respect to the late Jim Johnson, LeBeau is better.
LeBeau has helped lead his teams to five Super Bowls, which includes two victories (and possibly a third). His defenses have finished as the number one overall defense in four of the past seven seasons.
He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010.
And if the Eagles could somehow convince LeBeau to come to Philadelphia, it would be one of the biggest signings in the history of Philadelphia sports.
Imagine if the Eagles could somehow lure defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, and defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau into Philly.
They would instantly be considered legitimate Super Bowl contenders, possibly even Super Bowl favorites.
