I’m proud to say that before the start of the 2011 season, I picked Eagles running back LeSean McCoy to win the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award.
My theory was that the Eagles would win about 13, but Michael Vick would miss a few games due to injuries and McCoy would carry the team during his absence.
Well, it hasn’t quite been that way. Then again, Vick did miss parts of three games, and McCoy really has carried this team over the past few games.
This season, he has rushed for 754 yards, the second most in the NFL, and the most in terms of yards per game. His 5.6 yards per carry is first among starting running backs. He has 10 touchdowns, and is the only player in the NFL to score in every game this season.
He was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week against the Cowboys, when he rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries.
He even has more points scored this season (60) than the Eagles’ kicker (59).
If the season ended today, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers would unanimously win the NFL’s MVP award.
But Bills running back Fred Jackson, Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady would be in the mix behind Rodgers.
If McCoy keeps up his incredible season, and the Eagles continue winning, he has an outside chance at the MVP award (and a better chance at the Offensive Player of the Year award).
