The Philadelphia Eagles have had a number of embarrassing plays this season.
Who can forget running back Ronnie Brown’s ill-advised lateral on the goal line against the San Francisco 49ers? Or Steven Jackson’s 47 yard rushing touchdown on the first play of the season?
Or kicker Alex Henery’s pathetic 63-yard field goal attempt or his two missed 30-something yard field goals? Or Victor Cruz outjumping Nnamdi Asomugha? Or DeSean Jackson’s fumbled punt after a nine-yard loss?
I could go on and on, especially with the way this season has been going.
But the pass by punter Chas Henry on the fake punt in today’s game might have been the worst play by an Eagles player not named Ronnie Brown this season.
The Eagles trailed the Bears 30-24 and faced a 4th and 6 from the Chicago 42. Nine and a half minutes remained in the game.
And the Eagles pulled out one of the most clever play calls of the season.
Special teams coach Bobby April had noticed that the Bears frequently didn’t cover the Eagles’ gunners, so he prepared for a fake punt if necessary.
He even had punter Chas Henry throwing passes to long snapper Jon Dorenbos in the second quarter, likely in preparation for the fake.
Oh, and the Eagles had practiced the play at almost every practice all season.
But when the time came for Chas Henry to throw the pass, he bounced the pass. He bounced the pass a good ten feet in front of a WIDE OPEN Colt Anderson.
Throw in the fact that Henry was a state champion quarterback in high school, and an emergency backup quarterback at the University of Florida, and his one bouncer is completely and totally acceptable.
After Henry’s bounced pass, the Bears took more than five and a half minutes off the clock, adding a field goal. They won 30-24 and essentially ended the season for the Eagles.
Consider Henry’s relatively unsuccessful season (42.2 yards per punt) and the fact that the Eagles have worked out other punters during the season, and I would have no problem with the Eagles handing Mr. Ray Guy Award his release papers.
