The Philadelphia Eagles have just four games left to go and there fan base needs a sign that there is, at the very minimum, optimism for the future. Step in Michael Vick, the $100 million man. The Eagles are married to Vick, especially head coach Andy Reid.
Andy Reid took the chance on Michael Vick and is heralded as an excellent quarterback coach. Vick’s progression has taken a step back this season. He has played in successful spurts, however, he has not looked like the quarterback of early last season.
Michael Vick has turned the ball over way too much this year. In an article I wrote earlier in the season called, “Michael Vick Needs to Improve His Play”, I wrote the following:
“Vick has been responsible for 10 turnovers (seven interceptions and three lost fumbles) in the first five games of the young season. That is an incredible amount of turnovers that no one seems to be writing about. Vick holds the ball like a loaf of bread. It is a terrible habit that needs to be broken immediately.”
Additionally, he is not making the reads a top tier quarterback makes in the NFL. Vick can do better and he must. In the same article, I said the following:
“It is clear to me that Vick is not going through his progressions. Granted, the protection is not the best, however, there are plays that he is missing. Take for instance Brent Celek. He has got to have more balls fired his direction. The middle of the field is Mike’s weakness.
Vick is the leader of the team. Andy has seemed to defer the Vick turnover question this long. If it continues, Vick is going to start hearing it from the fans. Remember, Vick has a $100 million deal. Fans expect top five quarterback play for that type of money.”
I wrote an article in mid-season season entitled, “What is Michael Vick’s Real Value to the Eagles?” I said the following:
“Vick will take a beating if he has too. Michael will use his wheels when necessary. Whatever it takes, Vick will give it his all. That is an admirable quality in an era of the selfish professional athlete.”
The beating Michael Vick has taken has been too much. Vick needs to be more poised. The bottom line, is that Michael Vick must wins games. Andy Reid is under fire. Vick could be the safety on the Eagle’s front office gun, if Michael is once again ‘Must See T.V.’

I sort of agree. I admire Vick’s heart and think he is one of the few Eagles that gives his all. However, “his all” results in extra hits from extending the play, not sliding, and forcing throws. His INT that ended last season (the throw to Cooper against GB when Djax was open underneath) sums it up. His aggressiveness gets him in trouble, when sometimes he should just throw the ball away.
Is he worth $80M (the # I use)? I tend to think they were going to have to give him that to avoid losing him to free agency (and like Desean, someone will likely overpay for him). The Eagles had let Kolb go and had no backup plan, so I don’t think there was much room to negotiate.
Finally, I wish someone would tell me why Brees doesn’t have trouble seeing the field. He’s Vick’s height, but doesn’t have nearly as many batted balls or missed receivers.
