The Philadelphia Eagles have signed former St. Louis Rams wide receiver Mardy Gilyard to a futures contract.
Gilyard, 25, was the Rams’ fourth round draft pick in 2010 and caught six passes for 63 yards as a rookie. he also returned 16 kicks for 256 yards (22.3 yards per return).
He was released by the Rams before the start of the 2011 season and was claimed by the New York Jets off waivers on September 4th. But he was released after five days and did not play football this past year.
If Gilyard makes the final roster for the Eagles next season, he has a very good chance to be their kick returner. Rookie Dion Lewis did not impress this year. Cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie had a few good returns before hurting his ankle but he will probably be a starter next season and will not be used on kick returns.
I predict that Gilyard will not make the team and will be signed to the practice squad instead. As of now, he would probably be the fifth receiver, behind DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant, and Riley Cooper, and ahead of Chad Hall and Steve Smith.
