Introduction

Twelve games into the 2011 season, Andy Reid’s job seemed to be in serious jeopardy. The so-called Dream Team had blown five fourth-quarter leads and was all but facing elimination in the NFC playoff hunt.

Dominating wins over the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets then catapulted the Philadelphia Eagles on a four-game winning streak that ultimately saved Reid’s job. The Eagles still missed out on the playoffs, but owner Jeffrey Lurie apparently felt Reid and the coaching staff had shown enough progress down the stretch that Lurie decided to bring Reid back for 2012.

Those fans who have followed the Eagles closely over Reid’s 13-year tenure as the team’s head coach had to know Lurie wasn’t going to fire Reid. But Lurie’s press conference (which may go down in Philly infamy) in which he vowed the season was “inexcusable” – but never did anything – was a giant slap in the face to Eagles fans everywhere.

An immensely talented team like the 2011 Eagles failing to make the playoffs is reason enough for Lurie to change up his head coach but there are more reasons than just one underachieving season.
