Eagles Dominate Sports Talk Radio In Philadelphia
No matter what time of year, the Eagles are the number one topic on Philadelphia sports talk radio. Even with the consistent success of the Phillies and the continual sell-outs at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia is still a football town.
Some people may disagree. I tell them to listen to 94.1 WIP or 97.5 the Fanatic. The majority of callers choose the Eagles as their topic. WIP’s Howard Eskin (a long time sports talk radio standout) may call himself ‘king’, but, in reality, the Eagles are king. This is evident, especially during the NFL’s off-season. The Eagles spawn more off-season discussion than any of the other three major sports teams combined (Phillies, Sixers, Flyers).
The uncertainty of the 2011 NFL lookout did not deter callers. And now, the ‘Dream Team’ finishing 8-8 leaves even bigger topics of discussion: the lack of linebackers and safeties on the defensive side of the ball; the pro/cons of Michael Vick; the continued success of LeSean McCoy; the resigning of DeSean Jackson; the constant questioning of Andy Reid’s coaching decisions; the commitment the front office/ownership has to winning the Super Bowl; will the Eagles ever decide to have a more balanced offensive attack?
Sports talk radio has been a long standing tradition in Philadelphia. New York claims that they invented the genre with WFAN. They were the first to go to a 24hr sports format in 1987, however, 610 WIP was the first to actually incrementally include sports talk for the fans in 1986. Sports underneath a microscope thus began.
