Trent Cole Is Offered The Contract Extension He Deserves

Trent Cole has had many sterling performances during the course of his career. Not many NFL fans know who he is outside the Philadelphia area. The Eagles do and are reportingly about to finalize a contract extension for his unsung sevices.

Trent Cole has played seven seasons in the NFL. He is 29 years old, just entering his prime. Cole was selected in the fifth round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles with the draft pick acquired from Washington Redskins for wide receiver, James Thrash. In his Cole’s rookie season, he started just three games garnering five sacks. He has been a starter ever since.

Early in his career, most thought Trent was just a speed pass rusher. At his core, he is. However, if you look at his play since 2006, Cole is much more. Just as he has demostrated in recent years, Cole is very effective against the run as well.

From 2006-2011, Trent Cole has averaged about 60 tackles per season. That is a lot of tackles for a ‘pass rushing’ specialist. That is even a lot of tackles for the position of defensive end. Trent Cole plays bigger than his size of 6’3 270lbs. This is due to Cole’s herculean strength and overall tenacity.

With his tremendous speed, Cole excels at sacking the quarterback. That is what the Philadelphia Eagles want him to do and he delivers. During the same time span, 2006-2011, Cole has sacked the quarterback 63 times. That is an average of 10.5 sacks per year. Twice he recorded 12.5 sacks in a season.

Trent Cole is durable as well. Cole shows up every week and has only missed three games in his career. Despite his consistent performance, Cole has yet to be recognized as a starter in the pro-bowl. Trent has been named as a reserve, twice (2008 & 2010). In 2008, he was merely replacing injured selection, Patrick Kerney. In 2011, Cole was snubbed by the selection committee.

In the NFL, it is not often to have a player with Trent’s sack production, along with his run tackling capability. In the NFL, it is not often to have a player with Cole’s durability. In the NFL, it is not often to have a player of Trent Cole’s calibre. Period.

With a new contract, Trent Cole finally is getting the acknowledgment he deserves.
