2012 Training Camp: Does Philadelphia Eagles QB Trent Edwards Have Any Chance to Make the 2012 Roster?
Heading into the 2012 NFL season, the big story at the quarterback position for the Philadelphia Eagles is whether franchise quarterback Michael Vick can stay healthy and whether he can turn in a career season.
If he can, the Eagles are expected to make a legitimate run at a Super Bowl title. But if he cannot, expect the Eagles to struggle in 2012, like they did when Vick struggled with turnovers and missed three starts last season.
At backup quarterback, the Eagles have third-year quarterback Mike Kafka, who will have a lot of pressure to perform if he needs to make any starts in place of Vick. Rookie third round draft pick Nick Foles is the third listed quarterback on the roster, while veteran Trent Edwards is currently listed at fourth on the depth chart.
That’s how it’s listed on the Eagles’ first depth chart, which was released on Monday afternoon.
With a month until the season, does Edwards have any chance at all of making the actual roster? Or is he just a training camp body?
I’ll be blunt as possible.
Trent Edwards has no chance to make the team in 2012. None.
The only possible way he could make the official roster is if there was an injury to one of the first three quarterbacks in training camp or the preseason, and even then, I can’t guarantee for sure that Edwards would be the quarterback they would pick as the replacement.
But if all three stay healthy, Edwards literally has a zero percent chance to make the team. He knows it too. It’s unfortunate but he’s in camp looking to earn a spot with another team by showing some impressive film in training camp or preseason games.
The Eagles are just a brief stop in his career, like it was for Vince Young, Ronnie Brown, and Steve Smith last season. The only difference is that those three went on to find homes in 2012 despite each turning in a brutal showing with the Eagles last season.
Young is with the Buffalo Bills. Brown is on the San Diego Chargers. And Smith is with the St. Louis Rams.
Edwards could easily never again take a snap in the NFL. He failed as a starting quarterback with the Buffalo Bills and he did not exactly revive his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars or the Oakland Raiders.
I predict that his career is over after he is released at the end of training camp. It’s unfortunate, because there are probably worse quarterbacks than him in the league, but that’s how it works in the NFL.
