Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid knows his team will face intense scrutiny during the 2012 NFL regular season. I believe this notion became clearly evident with last Monday night’s heated sideline exchange with veteran defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins.
In the confines of a preseason game, a head coach rarely, if ever, berates a player or a unit on the sidelines. Andy Reid felt compelled since his defense was making bone headed mistakes resulting in untimely third down conversions for the opposing team. The reason Andy Reid aggressively addressed the situation was simple: Andy Reid must be feeling the looming pressure of expectations for the 2012 season.
The Eagles are coming off a disastrous 8-8 2011 season in which the “Dream Team” moniker became a national story. The organization addressed the off-season with a new found fervor, re-signing key young talent (WR DeSean Jackson , RB LeSean McCoy), acquiring free agents that fit a particular need (LB DeMeco Ryans, S O.J. Atogwe) and drafting players that could/should have an immediate impact (DT Fletcher Cox, LB Mychal Kendricks).
Andy Reid is known for his ability of elevating the play of the quarterback position. Injuries aside, quarterback Michael Vick is an Andy Reid project. Michael Vick’s disappointing play last season left many wondering why he had regressed so much. Andy Reid knows this as well. The Eagles offense is Andy’s baby. Reid’s extensive play sheet is legendary. Michael Vick must execute Reid’s play calling effectively or their could be consequences.
Besides thinking about the future, the Eagles drafted Arizona QB Nick Foles in the third round to be a possible safety net. Why else would the Eagles select a quarterback with such a high pick after giving Michael Vick over $40 million in guaranteed money?
On paper, the Eagles are a team that should make the playoffs. Coach Reid knows there are no excuses left for a disappointing season. Andy is known as a coach who always has his player’s backs. Do not be surprised if that could change this 2012 season. Reid will always place blame on himself first……however, I believe this season Andy will not be afraid to call players out who deserve it. After all, the organization has made every effort for the Eagles to be impactful in 2012.
