In an interview with USA Today, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick did not rule out the possibility that he could miss the season opener against the Cleveland Browns, which will occur in 17 days.
“I’m trying to do the best I can,” Vick told USA Today. “I can only do what I can do. I’m feeling better. Hanging in there. Trying to make it to Sept. 9.”
That doesn’t sound as positive as head coach Andy Reid’s endorsement on Wednesday that he couldn’t imagine any scenario in which Vick wasn’t ready for the season opener. Reid also said that if Friday’s preseason game against the Cleveland Browns was a regular season game, Vick would play. Vick did not make the trip to Cleveland for the Eagles’ third preseason game, however.
Vick estimated that his ribs are at about 80 percent right now. The 32-year old quarterback took a shot to the ribs by New England Patriots linebacker Jermaine Cunningham in the Eagles’ second preseason game. He did not sustain any broken ribs or cartilage damage, just a rib contusion and bruising.
Despite his extreme tendency for injuries, Vick says he doesn’t plan to change the aggressive style that he has used throughout his entire career.
“I just let everything happen in that moment,” Vick said. “I can’t go to the line dictating what I’m going to do. I can’t go to the line trying to predict everything that I’m going to do. That would hurt your game a little bit, because I might miss somebody getting open. I have to go through my progressions to the best of my abilities.”
If Vick could not start the opener, it would be either Mike Kafka or Nick Foles starting in his place.
