NFL teams had until 4pm today to trim their rosters to 75 players, and the Philadelphia Eagles had quite a few decisions that needed to be made. With a team as talented as the Eagles, there are going to be good players that do not find a spot on this team, but they could very well end up on the roster of another club. Teams can also place players on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list to give them an opportunity to keep some additional players on the roster for the time being for further evaluation.
The Eagles cut 11 players over the weekend: WR Elvis Akpla, S Wade Bonner, DE Xavier Brown, WR Brian Hernandez, WR McKay Jacobson, WR Tiger Jones, G Alfred McCullough, DB Tom Nelson, CB Kevin Thomas, OT Thomas Welch and CB Cliff Harris.
Today, the team announced that they waived WR Jamel Hamler, placed LT Jason Peters on the reserve / non-football injury list, put DT Mike Patterson on the reserve / non-football illness list and moved G Mike Gibson to injured reserve.
The wide receivers were likely aware that their chances to make this team were slim to none, but the opportunity to play for a few weeks in Philadelphia very well could have given them the exposure needed to land with another team. It was somewhat surprising that Jason Peters was placed on the PUP list and not IR; this leads me to believe that the Eagles are holding out hope he may be ready to return in time for the playoffs, should the team make it that far.
Philadelphia now has until 9pm on Friday to get their roster down to the final 53. I definitely do not envy the decision makers in Philadelphia, as they are going to have to make some incredibly difficult personnel decisions regarding their incredibly deep defensive line. Their excess at the position is going to be found treasure for some teams in the league, as the Eagles are going to have to let go of some very capable players.
