Heading into 2012, the main concern for the Philadelphia Eagles involves–what else–the health of quarterback Michael Vick.
Vick missed three games in 2010 with torn rib cartilage. He missed three games in 2011 with a pair of broken ribs. And he was knocked out his second preseason game against the New England Patriots with a rib contusion.
It’s highly unlikely that Vick can play a full season without injuring his ribs, let along play a full season without injuring any part of his body.
Yet Rob Vito, the CEO of Unequal Technologies, guarantees that Vick will not get hurt this season. So what does he know?
Well, plenty.
Vito is in charge of the company that designed a custom-fit Kevlar vest for the Eagles quarterback to wear during games. But Vick wasn’t wearing the vest when he was injured against the Patriots. He will, however, be wearing the vest during all regular season games.
“What Michael is wearing was born on the battlefield and forged on the gridiron,” Vito said.
Sounds promising, right?
Here’s what Vick had to say about the padding:
“To give me more protection, just to see what comes out of it,” Vick said. “It’s going to be custom-fitted and fitted to protect all across my sternum, all across my ribs. I think it’ll be a better feel. You can barely feel them. The way we get them fitted, the type of material that they have nowadays can withstand a lot of impact. It’s just that the last one wasn’t protecting me in a certain area so we’re going to try to cover up all areas.”
However, head coach Andy Reid doesn’t think that the vest had anything to do with his quarterback’s injury against the Patriots.
“It’s a Kevlar vest. It’s the latest, greatest. It’s supposedly…the best,” Reid said. “That’s what I can tell you. They’re not quite as cumbersome as the other ones, will still protect him. He took a good shot. It wasn’t a matter of what he had on. He took a pretty good shot back there.”
Only time will tell if the CEO’s claims are accurate. If they’re not, I think the Eagles should sue (just kidding–sort of).
But if they are, imagine the advertising that Unequal Technologies can use for their future.
“Buy our Kevlar vest. So protective that it even kept Michael Vick healthy for a full season.”
Seriously, if this padding works, and the Eagles win the Super Bowl this season, Vito deserves a ring or a part of the winner’s share.
