Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie gave his annual State of the Eagles speech to the team on Wednesday afternoon.
Among other things, he touched on his divorce with his wife, the death of Andy Reid’s son, and the departure of Joe Banner this offseason, calling it the most tumultuous offseason in his tenure.
He also addressed Reid, saying that contract situations for the Eagles head coach will not be discussed until after the season. And he also said that an 8-8 season would not be enough to save Reid’s job in 2013.
“No, it would not,” he said.
Lurie was asked to clarify that answer, regarding potential injuries for this season.
“Listen, you’ve just got to make the best decisions you can after the season,” he said. “But as I said, 8-8 was unacceptable.
“Again, I’m not going to make blanket statements, but I really wanted to try to explain to you that 8-8 was unacceptable,” he said. “I guess if two-thirds of the team is not playing, there’s always exceptions. But that was a really unacceptable outcome. I just really wanted to reiterate that.”
Reid is signed through the 2013 season, but no coach who has been tenured as long as Reid is going to enter the final season of his contract without an extension.
Lurie said that the death of Garrett Reid will not affect his decision on bringing back Reid.
“Andy will always have our sympathy and support, but this is a business and you’re there to win and win big,” he said. “You have to separate the two. All the analysis will be on Andy Reid, the coach.”
The good thing is that I really don’t think there is a lot to worry about this season. I have the Eagles winning 11 games.
