The battle for the third quarterback position on the Philadelphia Eagles has apparently been decided.
After a stellar preseason, veteran Trent Edwards has edged out third-year quarterback Mike Kafka for the final quarterback spot on the Eagles, according to a report by Tim McManus of Phillymag.
In four preseason games, Edwards completed 54 of 80 passes for 489 yards, four touchdowns, zero interceptions, and a passer rating of 100.5.
He called it the best preseason of his career, which has spanned six seasons now.
“I’ve been asked, if you don’t make it here, do you want to be somewhere else?” Edwards said. “But that’s not what I want. I want to be here. This is the team I want to play for.
“I feel like I can help this team. I feel like I can help these guys [other quarterbacks]. People ask me about getting plays on tape. No, this is where I want to be.”
The Eagles are currently shopping Kafka, according to Albert Breer of the NFL Network. Kafka played in just nine snaps this preseason, before a broken left hand sidelined him for the remainder of the preseason.
He had entered camp with high expectations to be the number two pick, and will end the preseason as the fourth quarterback, thanks to the stunning preseason by rookie third round draft pick Nick Foles and the surprising success of veteran Trent Edwards.
Don’t expect the Eagles to get anything in a trade for Kafka, however. Teams aren’t stupid and they know that the Eagles will have to cut Kafka by the end of the day. He’s going to be lucky to even find a spot on any NFL team, considering his limited experience, his reliance on the West Coast offense, and his failures this preseason.
