Claude Giroux Gives Sidney Crosby Credit For Need For Wrist Surgery
With a breakout season from Claude Giroux last year with the Philadelphia Flyers, it looks like we are going to have a fantastic rivalry for quite a few years between him and Sidney Crosby in Pennsylvania.
Aside from meeting six times a year, they also met in the first round of this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs, with the two battling throughout, including dropping the gloves in that ugly Game 3, that gave the Flyers a 3-0 lead in the series over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Giroux had surgery on both of his wrists back in May, right after the Flyers were eliminated by the New Jersey Devils in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. His right wrist needed surgery to repair some torn cartilage, while his left wrist needed to have some bone spurs removed.
Going back to that rivalry, Giroux is crediting Crosby, not only for the scars after his surgery, but the surgery itself. From the Timmons Press in Ontario:
“Those are from (Sidney) Crosby,” he says half smiling, but with some tension in his voice. “Every time we’d line up against each other for a face-off during our (2012 playoff) series, instead of going for the puck when it was dropped, he’d hack me across the wrists. I ended up playing the series against (New) Jersey with one of them fractured and had to go for surgery on both of them after we were out of the playoffs.”
As if we weren’t already excited to see the two square off on the ice again next season, this should add a bit of fuel to the fire. We likely won’t hear a response from Crosby, so tune in October 18th, when the two teams meet each other for the first time in the 2012-2013 season.
