The Washington Nationals have expressed interest in right-handed pitcher Roy Oswalt, according to MLB.com. Oswalt just finished a five-year, $73 million deal, the final 14 months of which were spent in Philadelphia.
Oswalt’s $16 million option for 2012 was declined by the Phillies, making him a free agent. The Nationals already have four of their five spots in the starting rotation filled, with Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmerman, John Lannan, and the newly-signed Chien-Ming Wang.
If Oswalt would go to the Nationals, Washington would have a formidable rotation, and after last year’s mammoth contract given to Jayson Werth, the Nationals have proven that aren’t afraid to spend money.
Oswalt was 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA this year for the Phillies, serving multiple stints on the DL due to a back injury and missing time due to personal reasons when his family’s home was ravaged by a tornado. Oswalt would likely serve as the ace of the staff, with Strasburg as the second pitcher, followed by Zimmerman, Lannan, and Wang.
