The Philadelphia Phillies signed outfielder Laynce Nix to a two-year deal. Nix, 31, agreed to a two-year deal with the Phillies as a reserve player and a left-handed bat off the bench.
Nix hit .250/.299/.451 with 16 home runs and 44 runs batted in last season, appearing in 124 games for the Washington Nationals. He is a nine-year major league veteran who has been on four teams.
Nix can play all three outfield positions, as well as first base. He played left field primarily in 2011, a little in right field and at first base, and eight innings in center field. He could be used as a fill-in at first base while Ryan Howard is recovering from his torn Achilles tendon.
Considering the Phillies have now signed Nix and Ty Wigginton, it’s highly unlikely the team will sign Michael Cuddyer.
