Former Philadelphia Phillies Pitcher Jamie Moyer Makes Colorado Rockies Opening Day Roster
If you thought the Philadelphia Phillies’ ageless wonder was finished after he underwent Tommy John surgery early in 2011, you were wrong. Jamie Moyer has officially made the Colorado Rockies’ 25-man Opening Day roster, and he will be pitching in the team’s second game.
The 49-year old left-hander is as crafty as ever, and despite not throwing much faster than the low eighties, Moyer is still fooling big league pitchers. He was 9-9 with a 4.84 ERA in 19 starts in 2010, walking just 1.6 batters per nine innings, his best single-season rate since 1998. Moyer won 56 games in five seasons in a Phillies uniform, helping the team capture a World Series championship after the 2008 season.
Moyer is 267-204 in his major league career with a 4.24 ERA in 4,020.1 innings pitched. He is a two-time All-Star and has finished in the top six in Cy Young award voting three times. Moyer is still 33 wins away from 300, and would need to average 11 wins per season for the next three seasons to reach the inevitable 300-mark.
He was initially drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the sixth round of the 1984 amateur draft, reaching the big leagues for the first time in the 1986 season. He pitched for the Cubs for three years, the Texas Rangers for two, St. Louis Cardinals for one, the Baltimore Orioles for three years, the Boston Red Sox for a season, the Seattle Mariners for 11, and the Phillies for the last five before spending 2011 out of baseball as an ESPN analyst.
