Phoenix Coyotes: Is Shane Doan Pricing Himself Off The Free Agent Market?
It appears that if Greg Jamison isn’t close to finalizing a deal to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes within the next couple of days, then Shane Doan is going to get serious about having talks with other NHL clubs.
Obviously there is already plenty of interest in Doan around the league, and he’s already visited with a few teams. His asking price, however, might just be enough to scare off some teams that could have had interest in signing him. Maybe that’s on purpose.
It’s reportedly going to take a four-year offer, to the tune of $30 million, to pry Shane Doan out of the desert. Not that many teams are going to want to pony up that type of dough to sign Doan to a contract.
Not that he isn’t worth a nice chunk of change. He’s a veteran guy, respected around the league, plays as physical as any forward in the NHL, and you can throw him in the top six and he’ll find ways to contribute. Who wouldn’t want a guy like that on their team?
But I can’t figure out what’s more ridiculous for a 35-year-old: a four-year term or the $7.5 million he’s asking for. Not only does that limit the market for him, but gives a pretty good indication that he doesn’t actually want to leave Phoenix. Again, maybe that’s on purpose.
By the end of the weekend, we should, finally, have some sort of indication of his plan. It’s still most likely that he remains a member of the Phoenix Coyotes, on a deal that will pay much less than $7.5 million a year. But if the ownership stuff isn’t quite settled, and there’s a team willing to throw an absurd amount of cash his way, watch out.
