On This Date in Pittsburgh Penguins History
- Sports Flags and Pennants
2010
the Penguins sign WHL’s Tri-State goalie, Alexander Pechurskiy (their 5th round draft pick in 2008), to a one-time amateur try-out contract to be the back-up to John Curry who was starting in net against the Vancouver Canucks (Marc-Andre Fleury did not dress due to a fractured finger and regular back-up, Brent Johnson, was already out with a lower-body injury); Pechurskiy ends up getting the nod in the second period of the game after Curry struggles and allows five goals; Pechurskiy has an amazing NHL debut stopping 13 of 14 shots for the Pens (who ultimately lose the game by a score of 6-2)
2009
Anaheim Ducks’ George Parros and Pittsburgh’s Bill Thomas became the second set of Pittsburgh’s area natives to pair off on Mellon Arena ice (the first native son duo to play on “home” ice were Ryan Malone and R.J. Umberger)
2007
Pittsburgh’s Mark Recchi plays in his 1,300th NHL game against the New York Islanders
1979
Pens goalie Greg Millen stopped 25 shots from the Minnesota North Stars for his second shutout with the team (the Pens won by a score of 5-0)
