On This Date in Pittsburgh Penguins History (August 1) / Penguins Trivia
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO FORMER
PITTSBURGH PENGUINS STAR
SYL APPS!!
(he turned 65 on this date)
Syl Apps was one of the Pittsburgh Penguins first hockey stars. He was drafted in 1964 by the New York Rangers and played a total of 10 years in the National Hockey League (NHL). Although he was drafted by the Rangers, he never played a game until he was traded to Pittsburgh in 1970. Apps made a name for himself while playing for the Penguins and centered what is known as the Century Line with Lowell MacDonald and Jean Pronovost. He also played for the Los Angeles Kings, but retired in 1980 as a Pittsburgh Penguin.
2010
- Mellon Bank’s naming rights on the arena, the home of the Pittsburgh Penguins, expired and the building name reverts back to the Civic Arena (was named Mellon Arena prior to that)
