2003
- at the age of 66, former Pittsburgh Penguins head coach and scout Herb Brooks died in a tragic car accident in Minnesota; Brooks was best known for coaching the men’s US Olympic hockey team to winning the gold medal over the Russian hockey team in 1980, for which a Disney movie was made — “Miracle”
1997
- the Penguins obtained Jiří Šlégr from the Edmonton Oilers for a third-round choice in the 1998 NHL Amateur Draft
Jiří Šlégr was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the first round (23rd overall) of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft.
In addition to the Canucks and Penguins, he also played for the Atlanta Thrashers, Detroit Red Wings, and Boston Bruins during his 22 year NHL career.
After playing his last season for HC Litvínov of the Czech Extraliga, Šlégr followed his political aspirations after being elected as a candidate of the Czech Social Democratic Party into the Chamber of Deputies in 2010. And as of December 2011, he remains in the Parliament.
