On This Date in Pittsburgh Penguins History (August 13) / Penguins Trivia
2002
- free agent right wing Alexandre Daigle was signed by the Pittsburgh Penguins
Alexandre Daigle was a talented prospect that the Ottawa Senators chose as their first round draft pick (and first overall) in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. He was signed to the biggest starting salary in NHL history at $12.5 million for five years, but is known to have been a “bust” as a first overall draft pick. He is surely still haunted by the quote he gave when asked about being drafted first:
“I’m glad I got drafted first, because no one remembers number two.”
1956
- demolition began on the Duquesne Gardens to make way for the Park Plaza apartments and a local fixture, Stouffer’s Restaurant, leaving Pittsburgh without hockey for five years
